Studio Design and Acoustic Treatment
A well-designed studio starts with the room itself. Room dimensions determine the distribution of acoustic modes (resonant frequencies), and rooms with poorly proportioned dimensions will have uneven bass response regardless of the equipment used. Recommended ratios such as 1:1.28:1.54 (Bolt ratio) help distribute modes more evenly across the frequency spectrum.
Monitor placement follows the equilateral triangle principle: the two monitors and the listening position should form an equilateral triangle, with the monitors angled inward to aim at the listener. The distance from the back wall and side walls affects bass response due to boundary reinforcement and comb filtering.
Acoustic treatment addresses three main issues: standing waves (bass traps in corners), early reflections (absorbers at first reflection points) and overall reverb time (broadband absorption and diffusion). Our calculators help size and position treatment panels for maximum effectiveness.
