What is the most important scale to learn?

The major scale is the foundation of Western music theory. All other scales and modes can be understood relative to it. The natural minor (Aeolian mode) is the second most important. Together, these two scales cover the vast majority of popular music.

Modes are scales built by starting on a different degree of the major scale. The seven modes are: Ionian (major), Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian (natural minor), and Locrian. Each has a unique character — for example, Dorian has a minor feel with a bright 6th.

What is the pentatonic scale?

The pentatonic scale has five notes per octave (penta = five). The major pentatonic removes the 4th and 7th from the major scale. The minor pentatonic removes the 2nd and 6th from the natural minor. These scales are widely used in rock, blues, pop, folk and world music.

What makes the blues scale special?

The blues scale is the minor pentatonic with an added flat 5th (the "blue note"). This chromatic passing tone between the 4th and 5th gives the scale its characteristic bluesy, bending quality. It is used extensively in blues, rock, jazz and funk.
